Helping Communities Win Together

As a social enterprise, HousingShield keeps tenants' housing and businesses financially solvent. Why? Because we believe in supporting people, profits, and the planet — not separately, but together, as one. It's good policy and good business. And while sometimes folks simply must move, HousingShield drastically reduces worst-case scenarios, and actively builds in resiliency measures for real people.

In the end, communities win together, rather than at each other's expense.

Community Impact

Social Good & Community Impact

Our team focuses on providing support however we can, in the way it makes most sense. On top of supporting individuals in conflict and mediating multi-party issues, we offer capacity support to others in the housing stability space. Focusing on the impact rather than ownership, we’ve supported existing programs to avoid reinventing the wheel, as well as providing frameworks and guidance for new programs to bring proven practices to every corner.

Individual case services include: educating about the legal and dispute resolution processes and decision-points; supporting decision-making through coaching and clarifying interests, needs and goals; helping participants navigate support landscape by triaging to appropriate organizations at opportune moments; mediating disputes in separate and joint sessions, producing settlement agreements as appropriate.

Systems-level support includes: consulting during design and planning phases, serving as a subject matter expert on dispute resolution methods to resolve disputes pre-filing and post-filing, adding implementation and growth capacity to existing programs, strategic advising on program iterative development and adaptation.

Pro Bono Housing Cases

We believe Access To Justice should not be limited to only those in a certain income bracket. And we believe that mediation produces meaningful justice outcomes, demonstrating our commitment to supporting communities in ways that are compatible with our business goals, rather than in tension.

Pro Bono Hours Donated

Collectively, our team demonstrates a strong individual and collective commitment to the work, not only when people can pay. We believe pro bono should not be an afterthought, nor a system drain, but part of a robust sustainable model that serves individuals in need, without having to rely exclusively on tax or grant dollars.

Collective Value of Agreements Brokered

Conflict is about far more than money, which is why this figure can only scratch the surface of the harm reduced, the units stabilized, the sunken costs mitigated or avoided. When people stand to win together, agreements stand on their own; we simply help them uncover it. Going forward, we are committed to measuring more of what conflict and resolution are really about: trust broken (and restored), families in crisis (who recovered), and so much more.

Our Reach

Who We Serve

Our team has conducted services all over the country for a wide range of dispute types; this map reflects our collective work in the housing landscape, responding to and serving individuals in landlord-tenant, roommate, and neighbor conflicts, as well as supporting systems-level work for new and existing housing stability programs and similar projects. When data is incomplete, we use conservative estimates to best reflect our work.

Behind every statistic is a person, a household, a relationship, or a community navigating one of life's most consequential challenges: the place we live and call home. While these numbers reflect meaningful impact, they cannot fully capture the full magnitude of our work: the stress prevented or managed; the tears and sweat poured into preserving dignity; the ripple effects of changing course during what may be one of the most pivotal moments of a family's lived experience.

Housing disruptions carry deeply personal consequences and far-reaching outsized economic effects that extend well beyond what traditional metrics can measure. These figures tell an important story — but only part of a much larger human one.
